Pinterest is a highly visual social media channel with over 300 million users. Clear images and videos are critical in posts, known as Pins, as images are the primary way viewers receive your brand’s messaging. Pinterest makes it easy to convey brand messaging with text overlays and logos which can be added with the Pin builder or with an image editing app. There are new video features for businesses to use making storytelling even easier.
When we talk about optimizing Pinterest for search, we need to understand what we’re optimizing for. We may focus on optimizing images for visual search or the text that accompanies it. To achieve a better return on investment, businesses should optimize both the image text and the text for every Pin to maximize visibility.
Ideal Images Pinterest
Image sizes are very important because we never want to have a Pin that looks fuzzy or distorted because the aspect ratio was wrong, or the original was of poor quality. Businesses should be careful to use sharp, colorful images with every Pin that works with Pinterest’s search capabilities.
Pinterest Visual Search
There are image search features on Pinterest that you may not be aware of for both organic and Promoted Pins. Pinterest visual search is the rectangular target that you see in the lower right corner of a Pin. Pinners drag the target over other objects in a Pin image to have Pinterest search for similar objects. So, if you have more than one object in your pain image for example a table and a chair then pinners can use the Pinterest visual search tool to find other pins that also contain the same chair and table.

Pinterest Lens is the mobile camera app that searches for Pins that match whatever your camera has captured. Product Pins, formerly Buyable Pins, lead shoppers to your website checkout page. Shop the Look Pins are tagged with multiple white dots so users can shop each piece of an outfit. Pinners are Shoppers and anything that makes shopping easier for them can increase conversions.
The more of these visual search features that you use and optimize for, the more likely your product or brand is going to be found in searches. Avoid fuzzy image or a distorted aspect ratio that causes the Pin image to look like it’s out of proportion. A pixelated image can be the result of an original image that was too small to be useful or an improperly resized original.
Eighty-five percent of Pinterest users access Pinterest using the mobile app. Since Pinterest users are likely to be shopping, using high resolution screens, we know that having a large, clear image is important for a successful strategy. Understanding ideal Pinterest image sizes and aspect ratios are critical.
Pinterest Pin Size 2019 – General Guidelines
Use a 2:3 aspect ratio for all Pinterest Pins. Most Pins are vertical, meaning they are taller than they are wide. For an example and ideal pin might be 1000 pixels wide by 1500 pixels tall. Using other ratios may cause your Pin to be cut off. The exception to this ratio is the max size video Promoted Pin.
Pin Text Field Lengths
In addition to the image Pinterest pins also contain a title, a description, and can also have a URL it’s important to use all three to optimize your Pin for text search and to send users to your website or app
Title:
A Pin title can be up to 100 characters long. Use as much of this title area as possible. Include keywords and keyword phrases that people use to find products like yours. This takes some keyword research to find relevant, popular phrases. If you don’t use a title Pinterest will use part of your description as the title.
Description:
Each Pin has a description below the image. The description can be up to 500 characters long. Just as you did with the title, use keywords and phrases that are relevant to your product. Again, do some keyword research and figure out what people search for so you can help them find your Pin. Put important words first because the first 50 to 60 characters are most likely to show up in people’s feeds.

Pinterest Profile Photo
Your Pinterest profile photo is round and is one of the most important images that you use on Pinterest because it shows up with each pin you save. However, you can upload a square photo and Pinterest will crop it. Remember your Pinterest profile photo shows up next to all your Pins in users’ news feeds and is rather small. So, don’t overcrowd your profile photo. Keep it simple, clear, and unique
The ideal Pinterest profile photo size is 600 x 600 pixels. The minimum size is 180 x 180 pixels.
Profile Large Cover Image – Banner
Like many other social media channels Pinterest has a large image at the top of each account homepage called a profile cover image. There are two options that determine the content of your Pinterest cover image.
Feature Pins on your cover from your Pinterest using one of two options:
- Latest Pins – The most recent Pins you saved
- Recent activity – Pins saved from your claimed accounts
Users cannot directly control the size of their Pinterest profile cover image, they only control the source of the images.
Pinterest is testing videos as profile cover images. Some business accounts already have this feature, but it isn’t available to all business accounts yet.
Below are the optimal image sizes for each type of image on Pinterest – from your profile image to a standard Pin image size – including organic and Promoted Pins.

Standard Pinterest Pin Image Size
When we talk about image sizes for a standard Pinterest Pin, the aspect ratio is what’s most important. A 2:3 aspect ratio looks best and is what Pinterest recommends. Images for standard Pins should be at least 600 pixels wide but there is no limit to the width or height. However, but the image will be scaled to fit. if you use a different aspect ratio, the image may be cut off.
Pin images are determined in terms of ratios. An ideal Pin can be anywhere from an aspect ratio of 1:1 ratio to a ratio of 1:2.1. The image should be a mimimum of 600 pixels wide. In the news feed Pins will be displayed with a width of 238 pixels with a proportional height.
Text Overlay – Pinterest Pins
A text overlay is copy or text that appears over the top of a Pin image or video. It helps your Pin stand out in a crowded news feed. If you’re running a Promoted Pin campaign in multiple countries or languages, be sure translate your text overlay and create a different pin for each language.
If you have a business account, there’s a handy tool for uploading Pins known as the Pin Builder. The new uploader tool helps add a text overlay and a logo. Alternatively, you can add text on top of the image itself with an image editor.
Standard Pins should use a 2:3 aspect ratio (ex: 1000 x 1500 pixels). Using other ratios works but may not look right with cut off images that may hurt performance.
Board Cover image Size
The board cover frame contains multiple image sizes which are chosen from Pins saved to that board. Choose an image from a saved Pin that fits the ideal aspect ratio with a minimum width of 600 pixels.

Video – Promoted Video Pin or Organic Video Pin
Like Standard Pins, Pinterest video Pins have a recommended aspect ratio: square (1:1) or vertical (2:3, 9:16).

- Encoding: H.264 or H.265
- Max file size: Up to 2GB
- Ideal Video Pin length: Minimum four seconds to a maximum of fiftenn minutes
Promoted Pin Carousel Size
Carousel Pins use the same recommended sizes as Standard Pins. Use a 2:3 aspect ratio as do all Pinterest Pins except Max with video Pins.

- Max file size: 32 MB per image
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 or 2:3
Logo Image Size – Pinterest Pin
Pins can have a logo added along with a text overlay as they are uploaded using the Pin Builder browser tool. Be sure to always Include your logo. However, don’t put a logo or important messaging in the lower right corner of the pin as it may be covered by the visual search tool.
Logos can be anywhere from 20 to 80 pixels square.
Promoted App Pin Size
Promoted App Pins have the same specs as standard Pins.
The optimal image dimension is 735 x 1102 px pixels, however, Pins will be displayed with a width of 238 pixels with a proportional height.
