Pinterest – Popular Topics for 2020
Pinterest 100 is an annual report to help Pinterest users – both personal and business accounts – understand what’s trending on the social media channel. Popular Pinterest searches include popular categories like food, home, fashion, beauty, health, travel, and family. This year, the Pinterest 100 report is organized into ten themes.
Last year’s Pinterest 100 included typical categories that we’ve come to associate with Pinterest – home décor, fashion, food, fitness, and health. At first glance, a business owner using Pinterest to drive traffic or sales might wonder why the big change over last year’s report. Which in turn leaves them wondering how to market their product or brand using this new information. Creating engaging Pinterest Pins that get attention in users’ home feeds is critical to gaining traction, engaging followers, and driving traffic to a website or app.
If you take a quick look at the latest Pinterest 100 report you might think that popular Pinterest categories have changed quite a bit. However, this top 100 list is not really a list of the popular categories on Pinterest but rather select trending search words and phrases grouped by theme. The Pinterest 100 list is organized and grouped to appeal to Gen Z users. However, the top categories really have remained much the same as last year and all prior years.
If you drill down into the top 100 Pinterest trends for 2020, you’ll see that Pinterest users are mostly interested in the same topics as previous years. Fashion, home décor, health, fitness, food, and travel are all still popular topics. The organization by themes helps highlight some top search categories and shows that some new sub search phrases are trending.
A business that uses Pinterest for organic traffic or pays for Promoted Pins can use this report to guide and improve their marketing strategy. Someone who is advertising on Pinterest with Promoted Pins or writing text description below a Pinterest Pin can use this information to help their Pin get discovered.
If you’re familiar with search engine optimization (SEO) you know how important choosing the right keywords is for success. Using longer strings of words (referred to as long-tailed keywords) is a strategy to keep the cost of advertising down. Long tail keywords may mean less clicks, but a well planned list can also mean lower advertising costs to targeted shoppers.
Use the Pinterest 100 list to develop long tail keywords to use in your Promoted Pins and Google Ads to help your brand get found online. For example you wouldn’t want to run an ad and use the word “weddings” as a keyword. It would cost a fortune and the intention of the viewer is not clear. Someone searching for a single-word search term like “weddings” doesn’t mean the person is shopping. A shopper who is looking to spend money on a wedding related purchase might be searching for “what to wear to a wedding” or “where to buy a wedding dress.” However, a shopper who is searching for “where to buy inexpensive second-hand wedding dresses” has a much higher shopping intention. This length search phrase is almost always cheaper to bid on than a single or two word phrase. This is the kind of information that the Pinterest 100 can help you use in your SEM strategy.

According to Statista, almost 80% of Pinterest users are female, as of 2019. Still the most gender imbalanced major social media channel, male Pinterest users have account for grown 20% of the demographics up from 14 percent.
What does Pinterest trending mean?
Pinterest trending is the customized home feed that users see when they sign into their accounts. User feeds are composed of a mix of accounts the user follows, but the majority of Pins are from accounts they do not follow. This helps Pinterest users discover new products. The curated Pinterest trending feed is based on past user behavior on and off Pinterest.
Pinterest – Five Most Popular Pinterest Categories, according to Statista
- Art, Art Supplies, Hobbies (48%)
- Flowers, Food, Drinks, Gifts (47%)
- Home, Garden, Pool/Spa (45%)
- Health and Beauty (45%)
- Clothing and Apparel (37%)
Last year’s Pinterest 100 list was more typical of the categories that Pinterest users are searching for and saving to boards. The trends in 2019 included travel, health, wellness, fashion, and home decor. Logically, these are the popular categories businesses that are advertising on Pinterest are accustomed to working with. But almost any brand can make themselves fit into those categories with a little bit of creativity.
One of my favorite retailers on Pinterest is Lowe’s which sells hardware, plants, construction supplies, garden needs, barbecues, appliances and other equipment. Lowes has done an excellent job of making their products fit into Pinterest trending topics. They don’t sell food but make good use of the food category by showing how their grills, lighting, and patio furniture can help Pinterest users plan the perfect outdoor celebration.

The themes show a cultural shift in search phrases. If you dig down into each one of them, you’ll see that the predicted Pinterest trends for 2020 are pretty consistent with what has been popular since its inception. The Pinterest 100 themes are listed below.
For example one might wonder how a theme named “space everything” has anything to do with Pinterest. But it turns out that on Pinterest 100, the “space everything” theme is classroom and educational information. Content for teachers maintains its spot as a top search phrase on Pinterest for the foreseeable future.
Another theme on the Pinterest 100 is rewilding. This theme is again about classroom information and nature, as you may have guessed, nature, travel, and other outdoor interests. So it’s not as wild as the name implies.
Internationally inspired is another popular Pinterest theme that’s a cross of home decor and food which have always been two very popular categories for the Pinterest demographic.
The most cryptic theme for 2020 is “home.” You might think it’s more about home assistants or the Internet-of-things, but again this is home decor a reigning including home theater, water fountains, audio rooms, and a little bit of fashion – all historically popular categories on Pinterest.
